Thurston County: Infant mortality

An infant is a child under one year of age. The infant mortality rate is calculated by dividing the number of infant deaths by the number of live births. We multiply the result by 1,000. In counties with relatively few people, a small number of infant deaths may have a significant effect on rates from year to year.

In Thurston County . . .

  • The infant mortality rate was NA per 1,000 in 1900, compared to NA per 1,000 in Washington
  • NA infants died in 1900, compared to NA in 1900

To get the most out of this indicator . . .

Ask questions:

·         Is the infant mortality rate increasing or decreasing over time?

Look at other indicators:

·         “Health: Late or no prenatal care” – Do most mothers receive adequate prenatal care?

·         “Health: Low birth weight babies” – Is there a high or low percentage of low birth weight babies?
