Idaho: Per capita income

Per capita income is the “mean” or average income received by individuals, that is, total income divided by total number of people. Here, we provide information on real per capita income, which means the data have been adjusted for inflation.

Idaho's per capita income, adjusted for inflation...

  • was $56,560 in 2021, compared to $69,276 in the U.S.;

  • increased 26.0 percent between 2010 and 2020;

  • increased 57.6 percent since 1969 when it was $26,969;

  • increased 13.0 percent in the 1970s, increased 15.0 percent in the 1980s, increased 52.4 percent in the 1990s, increased 0.7 percent in the 2000s, and increased 21.5 percent in the 2010s;

  • ranked 44th - from highest to lowest - out of the 50 states in 2021.

To get the most out of this indicator . . .

Ask questions:

·         What is the average amount of income per person in your county?

·         Is per capita income increasing or decreasing over time?

·         How do local incomes compare to state and national averages?

Look at other indicators:

·         “Population: Age” – Populations with a relatively high dependency ratio may have lower per capita incomes.

·         “Income and poverty: Median household income” – Since per capita income can be skewed by very poor or very rich individuals, look at median household income to get a better picture of “middle income” households.

Dig deeper:

·         Look at the county rankings for your state and/or view maps to see how your county compares to others.

·         Take a Big Picture view of your county.

·         If you have specific questions, send us an e-mail.

Note: The Consumer Price Index (CPI) is a measure of inflation. Here we adjusted dollar values by the CPI-U, which is the most commonly used CPI. Using the CPI to put dollar values in “real” terms makes it easier to see “inflation-free” change over time. Our base year is 2022, which means all dollar values are in terms of 2022 dollars.
